POWR³ of History, LLC ensures America’s places of worship the guaranteed ability to preserve their critical historical documents, images, recordings and other information in the event of arson, and natural disasters that result in the loss or serious damage of your buildings and their contents.
Earlier this year we witnessed numerous churches and places of worship destroyed by arson in Alabama. In 2005 we witnessed hundreds of places of worship being damaged or destroyed as a result of hurricanes throughout the Southeastern United States. In a recent Fox News report, Fox News stated that 1385 places of worship were damage through arson or other assault in 2005. In response all reports of the 2005 and 2006 Alabama and Phoenix church burnings, and the loss of numerous places of worship due to hurricanes, arson and other causes, and driven by sorrow for the congregations, members and their communities, JAT Risk Solutions, a private management consulting firm expert in risk avoidance and mitigation has established the POWR³ of History, LLC, a not-for-profit entity to provide a sustainable and affordable solution that prevents the loss of historical and other critically important documents, recordings and other information at the local church, synagogue, mosque, and temple.
Solution:
Under JAT Risk Solutions leadership POWR³ of History has designed a process and supporting technology to capture, store, index, search, retrieve, and retain historical documents, recordings, photos, images, and other records for all concerned places of worship. This project will facilitate use of church, synagogue, mosque, temple, diocese, records, and other held collections that reflect family and local history, and many other areas of interest and value. These local, regional, state and national historical records repositories convey knowledge of a shared national experience from generation to generation. Often church, mosque, temple, synagogue, and diocese archives reflect hard copy original documents, original taping of services and event and are exposed to loss by the destructive forces of nature, vandalism and arson. Through POWR³, a process with supporting technology and services will be provided. All critical records and their content will be digitized, stored, and available eliminating future risk and provided without unnecessary costs. These records are exclusive of the equally valuable historical occurrences at our places of worship. Through POWR³ we plan to:
- Identify local churches, synagogues, temples, dioceses and other places of worship initially within the Lynchburg Virginia metropolitan area, and later throughout the South East, Atlantic Coast, and then Nationally. Our staff and representatives will meet with leaders, and provide processes and systems that will aid them to identify critical and historic documentation for capture, recording, archiving, storage and retrieval.
- Identify and understand concerns relative to potential loss of critical and historical document and determine what processes are in place to capture, record and retain these items.
- Develop a comprehensive business plan that addresses the issues identified in the prior steps and provides the required solution to remove the risks of loss of critical and historical documents.
- Align our mission, seek strategic partnerships, advice, and invite select membership on our board to experts in the history of America’s houses of worship, leading technology firms, and record retention solution experts to eliminate the risk of lost critical and historical history from our nation’s places of worship.
- Encourage and leverage the research in this area, including that which is conducted for the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), and others.
- Reach a majority of places of worship in the 50 states and territories through direct mail, national television promotions, and the Internet to provide information about POWR³s’ three phase technology solution.
- Initially establish a standardized cost effective permanent archival records program for places of worship throughout the United States through subsidized (foundation grants) that enable basic archival, protection, and retrieval of important documents and information. Secondly, POWR³ plans to enhance the system to permit robust document management capabilities through remote access and the Web.
- Develop formal educational opportunities for missionaries, students, archivists, genealogists, and religion historians through the POWR³ Research, LLC, a subsidiary.
- Preserve millions of historically important photographic and other special collections of documents, oral and video recordings and make all houses of worship accessible through controlled, secured Internet Web access.
- Create “cyber archives” which make massive amounts of primary source material available via the Web bringing millions of images from the Nation’s religious history to viewers, congregation members, genealogists, and historians.
- Enhancing and promoting the public's visit to Church’s, Synagogue’s, Temple’s, or other worship center sites by promoting research and access to historic and genealogic documents available at each site.
- Working with scholars and citizens around the world to use these documents to further discussion of religious freedom, democracy, and human rights.
- Partner with colleges, universities, and worship centers to create scholarly, annotated, and multi-media editions of special interest subjects such as The Selected Papers of Religious History to be published in electronic format beginning in 2007.
The POWR³ records program will support research and development into methods for preserving and making accessible local religious and community records created or stored in digital formats at places of worship.
- POWR³ will establish a trust fund to award grants for basic research and implementation of processes, technologies and other means to further facilitate record preservation.
- POWR³, a not-for-profit history preservation corporation has established and is pursuing an initial program to identify, apply, and secure funding through grants, private investment, and commercial loans to ensure on-going research, development, market assessments, and penetration are successful.
In the following real life example of disasters striking places of worship, little attention is given to the loss of history or the plans to protest it along with the building structures.
